Moving Tips      

 

Moving can be a harrowing experience, especially the first time you move.  If this is the first time, I hope these tips will help make your move better and ensure you don't forget crucial documents or other things just when you need them most.

 

Before reading on, please note that we have put web links to your schools, utilities and governmental agencies that will be of service to you prior to and after your move.  Click here on Community Links or on the Community Links button on the left menu to get to these important web links.

Call for reading of gas, water and electric meters.  Don't have them turned off.  Your purchaser will be informed to change the account on the day of closing.

Cancel telephone, newspaper deliveries, gardener and existing insurance, etc., effective the day after closing.

Have your refrigerator and other appliances serviced and prepared for the moving trip.

bullet

Write or call the utility companies in the city to which you are moving.  Ask them about necessary fees or deposits required for installation of services.  Remit same, if required.

Send your forwarding address to your local post office and send change of address cards to magazines, insurance companies, companies from whom you receive dividends and bills and to stores and friends, etc.  Form are supplied FREE by the post office.

For your safety, do not let strangers into your home even if they seem like a prospective buyer.  If any individual comes to the door requesting a viewing of your home without an appointment, give them Sergio Hernandez's business card.

Transfer your fire insurance on household goods or other insurance on personal property so that they will be covered at your new home and en-route.

Notify your children's schools about your intended move.  Get a letter of transcript of your child status in school.

bullet

Obtain birth records, baptism records, medical records etc., along with eye glass prescriptions prior to departure.

Transfer your bank accounts

bullet

If your automobile or other possessions are not fully paid, get permission to move them and notify your automobile insurance agent.

bullet

Have your present bank arrange credit references for establishing new accounts in the city to which you are moving.

Leave keys for your present property with you Realtor, Sergio Hernandez.

Florida Motor Vehicle Information

 

Florida license plates, (called "tags" here) should be obtained within 30 days of establishing residency, starting employment, or enrolling the kids in school.  Proof of ownership and insurance is mandated (your vehicle must be covered by "no-fault" or personal injury protection, PIP). 

 

The Tag Office will need to check the vehicle ID number, so don't forget to bring the vehicle with you.  If there is a lien on the vehicle, you must provide this information, the lien holder's address and the account number.  Fees depend on the type of vehicle.  Florida enforces a seatbelt law and children, up to age 4, must be in an approved child's car seat.

About Homestead Exemption

 

Residents of Florida are exempt from paying taxes on the first $25,000 of the assessed value of their home, provided they file for the exemption between January 1st and March 1st.

 

Contact the Tax Assessor's Office for the county in which you reside.  Filing need be done only once so long as you continue to live on the property.
